In Zbrush I work a lot with subtools. So the simplest way of keeping separate material zones when importing to DS seems to be to import all the. The model will retain UV information and can be subdivided on import (with CC). You cannot subdivide selected objects though - only everything. Personally I'd open the model in another DCC like maya and run mesh cleanup getting it to highlight problem areas rather than fix them and see.
